NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY:

In the East, scattered snow showers occurred in parts of New England and across portions of the Lower Great Lakes. Light snow exited eastern Massachusetts late Monday morning with less than an inch of accumulation as a weak disturbance pulled east. Snow amounts of up to 2 inches were found across portions of northeastern Ohio and western New York due to lake effect snow showers. Quiet conditions were found south of the Great Lakes through the Appalachians and over much of the Deep South. Light rain showers persisted throughout the day across northern and central Florida .

Across the central United States, blizzard conditions were found across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest as a strong clipper system moved through the region. Winds gusted from 50-70 mph over Nebraska and South Dakota on Monday and combined with 2-4 inches of snow, visibilities were greatly reduced. Travel was not advised in a few counties in North Dakota due to the blowing snow. Snow showers advanced through Minnesota, western Wisconsin, Iowa, and northern Missouri through midday and by the evening hours the snow was found over Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and eastern Wiscosin. In the milder air, light rain showers were found over portions of Kansas and central Missouri. Conditions were quiet across the south central US but wind gusts of 40-50 mph were found in portions of Oklahoma and Texas.

In the West, snow was moderate at times in portions of Colorado during the morning hours. Snow totals of up to 9 inches were reported around the Denver area and wind gusts at over 40 mph contributed to areas of blowing and drifting snow. Snow showers were found northward up through the Rockies with light accumulations generally. Elsewhere, strong winds continue to funnel through southern California with gusts of up to 50-70 mph.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:

In 1912, Maryland recorded its coldest temperature ever, -40F at Oakland.

In 1964, Williamsport, PA was buried under twenty four inches of snow. Nineteen inches fell in Nantucket, MA and Scranton, PA.

In 1997, a winter storm spread freezing rain over much of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana, knocking out power to over 100,000 people. One unexpected side effect of the ice storm was a pronounced baby boom nine months later in area hospitals.
