WASHINGTON, Okla. - The Hayes family is losing their home, and they couldn't be happier.

Leah Hayes suffered from a fetal stroke. The 16-year-old's life has been billed with taking various medications and most recently undergoing two brain surgeries.

As Leah and her mother, Betty Hayes traveled to Dallas for the surgeries and treatment, members of their small McClain County community decided they could do something at home.

Residents of the town of Washington are coming together to build the family a new home. Betty Hayes said watching the demolition was a little frightening, but she's excited for the future of her new home.

"It's exciting," she said. "I know we're blessed, thoroughly blessed."

Leah still suffers from uncontrollable seizures.

"This is something I've always wished for, for my mom and prayed for so hard," Leah said.

Charlotte Singletary, with the First Baptist Church, said the community wanted to do something for Leah and her mother.

"Especially when they're sick, and she'd had surgeries like she's had, she needs a healthier environment," Singletary said.

The community has had a lot of labor and supplies donated, but they still need more.

"We're doing most of this on faith," Singletary said. "I know that God is going to provide all this. I'm not worried"

Betty Hayes said she's not worried either.

"This is hard," she said. "Can't help but be happy because they're doing it out of the love of their hearts and their love for God, and what God puts in your heart to do for other people."

The volunteers need help with cement, plumbing and electrical supplies. For more information on how to help call (405) 288-6060.
