TULSA, OK -- The trial begins for a Broken Arrow man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend and holding her hostage for hours. Kelly Waymire is also accused of shooting and injuring a Broken Arrow Police officer. He was in a four-hour stand-off with police last October. And now, he faces a string of felonies, including five counts of shooting with intent to kill.
Prosecutors said in opening statements on Tuesday that Kelly Waymire was on a mission to hurt his ex-girlfriend, Teresa Thompson. And, they say he was willing to take out anyone who got in his way.
The Lifeflight helicopter racing through the sky was the first sign October 1st, 2007 wasn't an ordinary Monday morning. Patrol cars blocked streets, yellow crime tape cordoned off yards, and special operations teams rushed to the scene.
A mother and her 15-year-old daughter were trapped inside their home with a gunman.
Prosecutors say that gunman was Kelly Waymire. Police say Waymire broke into his ex-girlfriend, Teresa Thompson's, house, got into a gun fight with her current boyfriend, and shot her and a Broken Arrow Police officer.
Investigators say Waymire held Thompson hostage for hours, rubbing cocaine in her wound. Prosecutors say Waymire and Thompson had dated, but he just couldn't let go.
Thompson had filed a protective order against him just a few months before the shooting. Thompson's boyfriend at the time, George Edwards, took the stand and told the jury that they were terrified of Waymire. Edwards then described weeks of problems, from the couple's cars set on fire, to their brake lines and phone lines being cut.
He told the court he and Teresa had been preparing for a day like last October. They had set up a surveillance system and even came up with an escape plan. They just had no idea it would end with her being shot and now paralyzed forever.
Prosecutors say Teresa Thompson will take the stand first thing Wednesday morning, followed by her daughter who was also held hostage.
The trial is expected to last all week.
