Yesterday in the East, autumn-like air occupied the northeastern part of the country with sunny skies and cool temperatures. Yesterday morning the low temperatures fell into the 40s from the Great Lakes eastward into Pennsylvania and New York. To the south, a frontal system stalled out from the Tennessee Valley eastward into the Carolinas. This front triggered showers and thunderstorms from eastern Tennessee into the Carolinas and southward into Florida. Rainfall generally ranged from 0.25 to 1.50 inches but locally higher amounts occurred. A few severe storms developed in Florida. A tornado touched down in Campbell, Florida yesterday afternoon, which downed a large oak tree. Also, a severe thunderstorm produced wind gusts of 60 mph in Kissimmee, Florida yesterday afternoon.
In the central United States, the trailing edge of a cold front generated showers and thunderstorms from southern Kansas southward into central and western Texas yesterday. A few locations in central Texas received over 1.50 inches of rain. Meanwhile, another frontal system began to spark off a broken line of showers and thunderstorms across the northern and central Plains yesterday evening. Variably cloudy skies and dry weather prevailed across the Upper Midwest through most of the day, but light showers entered northern Minnesota yesterday evening.
In the West yesterday, the combination of a cold front and monsoonal moisture resulted in showers and thunderstorms throughout the Rockies, Four Corners, and parts of the Intermountain West. A cluster of severe thunderstorms developed in southern Arizona. A severe thunderstorm produced wind gusts of 60 mph in Tempe, Arizona yesterday evening. Elsewhere, areas of dense fog developed along the West Coast during the morning hours, but fog gave way to fair skies in the late morning and early afternoon.
