Across the East, scattered showers and thunderstorms developed across the Southeast and Deep South during the late afternoon and evening hours. Rainfall amounts were locally heavy, but severe storms brought hail and wind damage to eastern Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. A few hail reports also occurred in eastern North Carolina. Meanwhile, a cold front pushed into the Ohio Valley and central Great Lakes. This also produced scattered showers and thunderstorms from Michigan to the Ohio River. Storms produced hail in Indiana. Rainfall amounts were locally heavy. Gusty winds and showers started to move close to south Florida as Hurricane Ike moved over Cuba. To the north, skies were partly cloudy with mostly dry conditions in the Northeast.
In the central region, several rounds of showers and thunderstorms developed in Kansas and Missouri before moving into the Middle Mississippi Valley. Rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches were reported over the area, along with hail in Missouri and Illinois. Showers and thunderstorms also developed in the southern Plains and southern Mississippi Valley. Further to the north, a few isolated showers developed over the Upper Midwest late in the day while skies were mostly clear in the central and northern Plains.
Over the West, heavy rainfall in Arizona and Nevada produced localized street flooding. Rainfall amounts varied from a trace to almost 0.75 inches over the Las Vegas, NV area. Meadview, AZ reported 1.58 inches of rainfall. The thunderstorms were sparked across the Great Basin, Desert Southwest, and southern Rockies. Clouds streamed into the northern Rockies during the afternoon, but conditions were dry. Skies were fair in the Pacific Northwest and California, along with the central Rockies.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:
In 1919, the 4th strongest hurricane to hit the US struck south Florida. The barometric pressure just west of Key West, FL fell to 27.37 in Dry Tortugas.
In 1965, Hurricane Betsy made the second US landfall at Grand Isle, LA. Damage was tremendous all the way to Mobile, AL. New Orleans, LA was flooded as power to the citys pumping stations failed. 58 people were killed in Louisiana alone.
In 1989, severe thunderstorms formed along a cold front located in the Ohio Valley. Frequent lightning interrupted the Purdue and Miami-Ohio football game as the stands were cleared.
