About 40 students from the Oklahoma School for the Blind had an awesome day on Thursday. They got to spend it on a real ranch with real horses. The News On 6's Rick Wells reports the students and the volunteer helpers got an experience they'll probably never forget.
Getting a chance for a ride on Ghost. William is one of 40 elementary kids from the Oklahoma School for the Blind. There are also about 80 volunteers at the Barefoot Ranch in Haskell for Horse Day which is hosted by the ranch and the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association.
The kids get to experience grooming, leading and riding. For many, it's their first experience with horses.
The inspiration behind this day at the ranch is Don LaPorte who lost his sight about 15 years ago, but still rides regularly.
"It gives me a little freedom is what the horses have done for me," said Don LaPorte.
He says he hopes the experience will give the kids an idea of other things they can do in life and, of course, there were other things they could do at the ranch.
The kids were given lunch and they also got to go fishing. Zebco provided some fishing gear for the day.
So, it was a day of food and fishing. But, the day was mostly about giving the kids a great experience, like a first ride on a big white horse named Ghost.
Horse Day was so successful; plans are already being made to repeat it next year.
