Oklahoma schools are leading the nation in alternative architecture built to save energy. At least eight districts have turned to domes.
The latest domed school-houses are going up in Dibble, near Norman. Two domes will become a gymnasium and middle school. Heating and cooling costs should be cut in half.
Folks in Beggs in Okmulgee County built their domes just as much for the storm safety as the energy savings. The school moved in back in 2005.
The domes are built out of steel-reinforced concrete. Architects say the domes are so well insulated, some districts save as much as $60,000 a year in energy costs.
