With the new school year right around the corner, a backpack is something on almost every child's back-to-school list. Backpack safety is something a lot of people overlook. It is important to know the how to safely use a backpack in order to promote good health. Below are important tips be aware of when choosing and using a backpack for school.
- Choose a backpack that is appropriate for the child's age and size. The backpack should weigh no more than 15% of the child's body weight.
- The pack should sit in the curve of the lower back. It should never reach more than four inches below the waist.
- Make sure the backpack has well-padded shoulder straps. Always use both shoulder straps and if there is a waist trap, use it.
- Only pack items that are necessary. Load the heaviest items close to the child's back. Also, look for backpacks with more compartments. The compartments help distribute the weight so it's not too heavy in particular area.
