A group of firefighters on a cross-country journey to fight cancer made a stop in Tulsa on Tuesday. As part of Code 3 For A Cure, firefighters are traveling more than 8,800 miles from California to New York and back.
They're stopping at fire stations around the country to collect the names of firefighters who have died from cancer.
Once they're in New York, the group will read all the names in Times Square.
"We want to really raise awareness about firefighters and cancer because, of course, cancer hits all of us and it's really become quite an epidemic. But, it is truly, truly a problem among firefighters because they are exposed to a lot of toxic chemicals throughout their career," said Peggy Abundiz with Code 3 For A Cure.
The group says firefighters are three times more likely to get cancer than the average person.
