OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Town hall meetings are being planned for later this year to help temporary U.S. residents know what documents they'll need to renew their driver's licenses.
The Governor's Ethnic American Advisory Council and the Department of Public Safety are working together on the events, which could start by the end of summer.
The idea for the town halls was sparked when one of the members of the governor-appointed council had difficulty renewing her license after the passage of Oklahoma's new immigration law.
Naturalized citizens need to show documentation only once to formally update their immigration status as American citizens.
Temporary residents must visit a driver's license examiner's office, where their immigration records will be checked.
