A Green Country trucking company hopes a large reward will help find vandals who tossed part of a headstone off a highway overpass. The incident left one of their drivers in critical condition.
News On 6 anchor Craig Day reports when Larry Williams with Frank Thompson trucking heard one of the company's drivers was injured, it made him sick. Of the dozens of things drivers have to look out for on the road, a piece of a cemetery headstone shouldn't have to be one of them.
"It had to be like a bomb basically hitting inside and him not knowing what happened," said Larry Williams with Frank Thompson Trucking.
The driver of the truck, 66-year-old Gerald Webb of Porum, was injured when that 25 pound projectile crashed through his windshield.
"We're just praying for him and hoping he's going to pull through," said Williams.
It left Webb in critical condition and co-workers shocked and upset.
"A guy doing his job and going down the road and something like this happen, like you said, it just enrages us all," said Williams.
The trucking company is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of those responsible. It's a hefty reward that they hope prompts someone to come forward with information.
"We wanted to get the public's attention. We can't let this happen to any other truck driver," said Williams.
In addition to justice in the case, Williams and other co-workers hope Webb, who is a father and grandfather, recovers. However, they think it's likely he may never be able to work again.
"We're out trying to do a job and something as stupid as this might cost a guy his life," said Williams.
This happened early on Thursday morning about three miles West of Locust Grove. Investigators are working to determine if the incident is linked to recent vandalism at a nearby cemetery.
Anyone who saw anything unusual at the cemetery or along the highway should call investigators with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
