The city of Claremore has joined a growing list of communities which are now allowing fireworks to be set off inside their city limits.
The Claremore city council approved the ordinance Monday and will allow residents to set off class C fireworks with the purchase of permits.
At Monday's meeting, the Claremore City Council approved an ordinance to allow for class C fireworks to be set off inside city limits with the purchase of a permit.
"In talking with Broken Arrow's city officials, we discovered that the program not only reduced calls for service and reduced the discharge of fireworks prior to and after the permit period, but it also created a new revenue source," said Cassie Sowers, Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator for the City of Claremore. "Our Assistant City manager and our Fire Marshal worked together to amend an ordinance that has been very difficult to enforce in the past."
Under the new program, a person over the age of 18 can purchase a permit for $25, which will allow them to discharge fireworks at a specified location from noon to 11:00 pm on July 3, 4 and 5.
Broken Arrow and Sand Springs have similar ordinances.
