The USDA has recalled more than 143 million pounds of frozen beef patties from a California-based company. Westland-Hallmark supplies meat to federal school lunch program and major fast-food chains in over 36 states. Federal officials suspended operations after an undercover video surfaced showing sick and crippled animals being shoved with forklifts.
Two former employees were charged Friday with animal cruelty.
No charges have been filed against Westland, but the federal investigation continues.
No illnesses have been linked to the newly recalled meat, and the health threat was likely small.
