A special election Tuesday, Feb. 5 will decide whether Lost City School will be annexed by Hulbert schools.  Lost City School district is located near Hulbert, in Cherokee County.

The school district needs about $200,000 to continue to serve its students through the 2007-08.  If patrons vote to annex, students will start attending Hulbert schools and Lost City ad valorem taxes will be transferred to Hulbert schools.  Estimates show that the school currently only has enough money to operate through the end of March.

If approved, the consolidation becomes effective Feb. 15.

According to greatschools.net, Lost City has 67 percent American Indian students, 32 percent white, and 1 percent Hispanic.  It has a lower-than-average student to teacher ratio with an average of eight students to one teacher (state average is 15:1).  Lost City has 72 students in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma representatives are apparently looking into offering the school some financial assistance so that it can keep its doors open.
