UPDATED (AP) Pia Sundhage has been hired to coach the U.S. women's soccer team through the 2008 Olympics.
A former star player for Sweden and recent assistant with the Chinese national team, Sundhage replaces Greg Ryan, whose contract was not renewed after the Americans finished third at this year's World Cup. The Americans will play their first games for her in the Four Nations tournament in China in January.
The 47-year-old Sundhage also coached in the WUSA and is familiar with many of the U.S. players, including team captain Kristine Lilly.
