It's not every day when the University of Tulsa notifies us they are setting a student on fire. The News On 6’s Rick Wells reports there is nothing to be alarmed about; it is all in the name of dramatic license.

Tuesday afternoon was a quiet day at the University of Tulsa, not much going on, or so they thought.

"Oh my God! Oh my God! What are you doing, Oh my God! Don't do it,” a TU student yelled.

No worries, it is just acting. TU is presenting "Marisol" a play with an apocalyptic story line.

"One of the people in the play who plays a homeless man has been doused with gasoline," University of Tulsa theater professor Lisa Wilson said.

In the play he is set on fire by a Nazi skinhead, also a character in the play.

Theater professor Lisa Wilson took The News On 6 inside the theater to look at the set. It is a drama about the future with social disorder, chaos and struggle. It’s a time when acid rain burns the skin and people are thrown in jail for maxing out their credit cards, but is it possible there could be a happy ending?

"Actually there is a happy ending, yeah," professor Lisa Wilson said.

A happy ending and lots of special effects she says. A guardian angel with wings, video projectors and even a man giving birth on stage. Jason Inman plays the man who's set on fire.

"It's probably the craziest thing I've done in the name of drama," student actor Jason Inman said.

Inman says he's done it maybe ten times so far in rehearsals, and it’s a pretty safe process. Inman wears and insulated coat, and the fire comes from oil soaked dryer lint in a wool sock.

"Marisol" will be presented at the University of Tulsa Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week and also the weekend following Thanksgiving. For tickets contact the university at 918-631-2567.
