WASHINGTON (AP) -- A top intelligence official says Americans need to rethink the meaning of privacy.

Donald Kerr is a deputy director of national intelligence and he says privacy no longer means being anonymous. People can expect to have a lot of information about them floating around. But Kerr says it's up to government and businesses to properly safeguard their private communications and financial information.

His comments come as Congress takes a second look at the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act. Last summer, lawmakers went along with the Bush administration's call to allow government eavesdropping inside the U.S. without court permission, as long as one end of the conversation is reasonably believed to be outside the U.S.
