ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- People across the nation are honoring veterans on Sunday.

Vice President Dick Cheney says soldiers from World War I to "the current fight against terrorism" have served their country valiantly. And he says above all they have kept America free.

In a Veterans Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, Cheney says the conduct of the military today and throughout history has made the country "very proud." He says he hopes those fighting in Iraq "will return in victory" to live out their lives.

Meanwhile, Congress has passed a resolution designating November 11th through 17th as National Veterans History Project Week. It calls on Americans to interview at least one veteran from their families or communities.

The project's director Bob Patrick says one of the goals of the project is getting the nation's youth involved in collecting both oral and written histories. He calls it a way of thanking war veterans.
