This weekends Oklahoma Air Show in Muskogee will give visitors a chance to see the Blue Angels up close. But not as close as News On 6 anchor Omar Villafranca got. Omar got a chance to ride in the FA-18 Hornet and see how the jet handles, and find out what he can't handle. The News On 6’s Omar Villafranca reports on his wild ride with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.
The Blue Angels fly faster than the speed of sound. The FA-18 Hornet maneuvers better than any sports car, and only the U.S. Navy's elite can take the multi-million dollar jet up for a ride. Occasionally, they relax the rules. Like this week when they took up News On 6 anchor Omar Villafranca.
Before stepping into the cockpit, Omar had to sit through a quick info session. He learned you do not touch the ejection seat, do not try and steer the plane and do not forget to breathe. Major Nathan Miller says flying will never be the same for The News On 6’s Omar Villafranca.
"For someone coming off a commercial flight and fly in the back, is, I would say, intense is a pretty good way to describe it,†Major Nathan Miller of the Blue Angels said.
He was right.
The takeoff from the ground is impressive. During the 40-minute ride, Omar had a view of Oklahoma very few people get to see. Major Miller hit the throttle shooting them through the air at over 700 miles per hour. The jet corners on a dime, causing Omar to black out, or turn his stomach inside out.
With two feet back on the ground, and the contents of his stomach in a bag, News On 6 anchor Omar Villafranca is now a member of an elite club, he has flown with the Blue Angels.
You can catch the Blue Angels this weekend at the Oklahoma Air Show in Muskogee. Gates open at 8 a.m. Saturday.
