DALLAS (AP) _ Oklahoma safety Nic Harris is being nominated for a courage award.

Harris is one of seven nominees by the Football Writers Association of American and the FedEx Orange Bowl for the courage award the two groups sponsor.

The award is for courage on or off the field including overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship.

Harris was shuffled from family to family as a child and now is president of Bridge Builders in Norman and Oklahoma City. The organization is a minority community service group that's involved in several projects.

Harris also serves as a mentor to children and works with Toys for Tots.
