The no’s have it, but that's not stopping supporters of a tax for development along the Arkansas River from having their say. While some who opposed the tax question are pleased with the failure, those who said yes to the proposal aren’t ready to give up what they think is best for Tulsa. News On 6 anchor Latoya Silmon reports many view the river as a great place to exercise or relax.
“I utilize the river a lot,†said Tulsan Kelly Knowlton. And, he feels the river should be used for a whole lot more. He says that’s why he said yes to river development.
But, there were more Tulsa County voters casting no ballots.
“I'm just about as happy as Councilman Roscoe Turner,†said one voter opposed to the plan. “I don't want this poured over concrete and over developed out here. This is the reason I like this part of town. I'm pretty low income right now, and I don't want to see a bunch of high income driving us out of town,†he added.
But for others, having the question turned down left them feeling nothing but disappointed.
“I think it was a great proposal and I wish it would have passed,†said supporter Kelly Knowlton.
“I think it was a long term vision and the people of Tulsa didn't see it. They saw it as a short-term, a short-term tax as opposed to a long-term benefit,†added Taylor, another supporter.
Many tax supporters hope the city will revamp their plan. Some have even suggested it be a city issue instead of a county one. And, they also think there should be more forums and debates so people know exactly what the tax question includes. Some feel that might have cleared up some of the confusion with Tuesday’s election.
