OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Missouri coach Gary Pinkel says he wasn't trying to run up the score when he called for a fake field goal late in Saturday's 41-6 victory over Nebraska.
The Tigers were up 34-6 early in the fourth quarter when they lined up in field goal formation with the ball at the Nebraska 10-yard line. Holder Tommy Saunders flipped the ball to Martin Rucker, who ran for the touchdown.
Pinkel says chances of success on a fake field goal are less than if the Tigers had gone ahead and kicked.
Pinkel says he's never allowed his team to run their score into the 50s or 60s. He says it's not poor sportsmanship to keep scoring when his team's point total is in the 30s.
Nebraska coach Bill Callahan says he didn't think Missouri ran up the score. Callahan said it's his team's job to defend the fake, not complain about it.
