A 19-year-old soldier has died during basic training at Fort Sill. Daniel Fisher of Virginia was hit by gunfire while learning how to load and unload a machine gun Thursday afternoon. Army officials say it's the first time someone died during this training in recent memory.
Training has stopped at Fort Sill temporarily while investigators canvas the area.
"My intent with this process is to first determine the facts, second identify the root cause of the tragedy and thirdly to take action to prevent such a tragedy from happening again," Major General Peter Vangjel said.
Fisher had three more weeks of training before he became a full-fledged soldier. He is survived by his wife.
