Hundreds of Green Country residents gather to raise money for two serious diseases on Saturday.
The ‘Pirates of the Cure-a-being’ walk was held Saturday morning at the Schusterman Center, at 41st and Yale. The walk raises money for the Juvenile Diabetes Association. One mom who participated in the walk organized a team for her 5-year-old daughter, who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes a year ago.
"When you hear my 5-year-old daughter say she doesn't want to have diabetes anymore it is all the more reason for us to work harder," said mother Michelle Kostas.
Organizers say 85% of the money raised stays in Tulsa. That money pays for research and hopefully the development of a cure.
Meanwhile, across town, members of the 918 Riders spent Saturday afternoon helping raise money for Sickle Cell Disease. They hosted a charity car wash, barbeque and basketball game in Lacy Park, at 2134 N. Madison Place.
All the money raised goes toward research for Sickle Cell Disease. Plus, the American Red Cross was there accepting blood donations.
"We can only do so much, so this is our way of helping the research to find a cure,†event organizer Lee Finch said. “This is our way of giving back, what we're able to do, to give back to the community."
During the charity basketball game the 918 Riders played against officers from the Tulsa Police Department. The 918 Riders won, now they’re hoping to take on the Fire Department for another charity game.
