EDMOND, Okla. (AP) _ The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is looking for ideas on how to restore Route 66 across the state to prominence and get it listed as a National Scenic Byway. ODOT is working with the University of Oklahoma and consulting firm Carter-Burgess in holding a series of meetings along the Mother Road in the Sooner state.
During a meeting in Edmond some suggested more neon while others would like to see the road more user-friendly to bicyclists.
The most popular request is for more signage along the highway and to preserve what could be saved of the old Route 66.
Similar meetings have been held in Miami, Tulsa, Sapulpa and Stroud. Future meetings will be in El Reno, Clinton, Weatherford, Elk City and Erick.
State scenic byways coordinator Richard Andrews says he hopes to have an application ready by spring for National Scenic Byways status.
