Some Tulsa area residents are getting their Check Up at Church. Several Members of the Southern Hills United Methodist Church have formed a 'volunteer parish nurse program'. News On 6 reporter Chris Wright reports the program was founded by four registered nurses.
They've already helped fellow members of their congregation and now they hope to reach out to the community.
Southern Hills United Methodist is a relatively small church with about 75 members. It's located at 6160 South Lewis Avenue in Tulsa.
Four of those members happen to be nurses.
After deciding to begin the parish nurse program, they posted an 'Ask a Nurse' bulletin at the church. Since then, the congregation has come forward with a slew of health questions for the nurses.
So they decided to expand the program, and plan a health fair.
It will be held next Sunday at the church. The nurses, as well as Oklahoma Wesleyan nursing students, will be on hand to offer advice on healthy eating, exercising, and other topics.
Southern Hill's pastor says he is impressed with how health-conscious his congregation has become.
"If we can support people's better health, that's a way for us to give back to the community and a way for us to help people live into who we believe God has created them to be - healthy people," says Pastor Jeff Jaynes.
The Health Fair will be held on Sunday October 30th from 10 am until 2 pm at Southern Hills United Methodist on South Lewis.
