The National Handgun Shooting Championships are taking place at a range in Tulsa that enthusiasts describe as a Disneyland for competitive shooters. The U.S. Shooting Academy at 6500 East 66th Street North is just a year old, but as News On 6 reporter Rick Wells reports it could host a world championship in a few years.
Michael Voigt is one of America's top handgun shooters and he is the president of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association and this is their national championship.
It’s a combination of speed and accuracy that earns you points during this championship. There are 18 stages, like holes on a golf course each one offers a different challenge.
"There is nothing like this anywhere in the US," says Tom Fee.
Fee is the CEO of the U.S. Shooting Academy, he built this place. A highway contractor came in and moved half a million cubic yards of dirt to create the facility on 94 acres just east of the Tulsa Police Academy.
"This is exactly Disneyland, this is the best facility I've ever been on in the U.S," says Michael Voigt.
The academy is still building and improving, and Tom Fee says their location just north of downtown Tulsa is almost perfect.
"Airport's ten minutes away, hotels are six minutes away, people just love it," says Tom Fee.
The ultimate goal would be to host the world shooting championship with 1,500 of the world’s best shooters in Tulsa.
