The Cherokee National Holiday is now underway in Tahlequah. The annual affair runs through Sunday with a number of events scheduled all three days. This year’s theme is “Common Values, Common Ground.” The highlight of the holiday is the parade in downtown Tahlequah on Saturday.

The annual parade kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Saturday followed by the Cherokee Nation State of the Nation address by principal chief Chad Smith. The speech and related ceremonies start at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on the front lawn of the Cherokee Nation Courthouse in downtown Tahlequah.

This is the 55th year for the holiday, which marks the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution.

The Cherokee National Holiday attracts over 90,000 visitors to the Tahlequah for the three-day event. Other events during the weekend include a powwow, golf tournament and a fireworks display.
