RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Evangelist Billy Graham was released from a hospital Thursday, nearly two weeks after he was admitted for intestinal bleeding, officials said.

Doctors identified the source of Graham's bleeding during a colonoscopy last week, said Merrill Gregory, a spokeswoman for Mission Health & Hospitals in Asheville. Physicians were able to treat the condition.

``We have been pleased that he has been able to come back from this incident as well as he has,'' said Dr. Lucian Rice, Graham's personal physician. ``He will continue to have therapy at home, and I feel that he can have a very good recovery.''

The 88-year-old evangelist was in good spirits as he left the hospital and was eager to resume hosting family and close friends at his mountainside home in Asheville, said his spokesman, Larry Ross.

``He's also looking forward to the possibility (of) writing another book,'' Ross said. ``But the priority right now is for him to regain his strength and continuing to rest.''

Physicians initially thought the bleeding was related to a diverticulum, or small pouches that form in the lower intestine, after Graham was admitted Aug. 18. They now say the bleeding source was an arteriovenous malformation, a tangle of small blood vessels in the lining of the colon. Doctors were able to cauterize the spot, Gregory said, and they closely monitored for additional bleeding.

``I am amazed at the staff's efficiency and compassion. I actually don't want to leave,'' Graham said in a news release. ``But as I do, I want to also express my appreciation for the support and prayers of so many people for me during this time.''

Graham spent much of his time in the hospital visiting with his children, keeping up with current events and taking walks around his hospital wing.

The charismatic Southern Baptist minister has been largely confined to his mountainside home in the hamlet of Montreat for several years, a sharp contrast to his worldwide crusade-based ministry that packed stadiums with believers and put him on the pulpit in front of millions.

Graham has a variety of ailments including fluid on the brain, macular degeneration and symptoms of Parkinson's disease. His wife, Ruth Bell Graham, died in June following a lengthy illness.

``He has been adjusting to life without his wife and ministry partner of nearly 64 years,'' Ross said, adding that Graham has been comforted by the support he's received in the wake of her death.
