WEATHERFORD, Okla. (AP) _ Student safety is behind a new notification system at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

The system allows the school to send emergency news to cell phones. The system will be used to communicate information during any potential emergency.

Rick Bolar, director of public safety at Southwestern, says the free service is for university employees and students. Those who sign up for it will receive text messages with information about emergencies.

The new system allows school officials to send instant alerts driectly to registered subscribers e-mail accounts and mobile phones.
