LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- When Nebraska was recruiting Adi Kunalic, the coaches told him they needed a strong-legged kicker.
Kunalic said he saw why when he was in the stands at the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day. Instead of having Jordan Congdon attempt a 47-yard field goal late in the game against Auburn, coach Bill Callahan went for, and failed to get, the first down on 4th-and-11.
Kunalic says he thinks he would have gotten the call if he had been the kicker.
The freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, is competing with Alex Henery for the field-goal and extra-point job and against Jake Wesch for kickoff duties. Callahan said the race is too close to call, but Kunalic said he likes his chances.
So does Rocky Willingham of Dallas, who has worked as Kunalic's private coach. Willingham says the Huskers got good bang for the buck with Kunalic.
