OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney stressed his conservative credentials in a trip to Oklahoma Tuesday, particularly his stern stand against illegal immigration.

The former Massachusetts governor fielded questions from more than 400 students and others at the University of Oklahoma medical school.

Romney says his biggest asset is the fact that he is not a Washington politician.

If elected, he says he would work hard to repair the United States' global image, starting with efforts to rebuild our relationships with leaders of countries like France and Germany.

Romney, who won Saturday's straw poll in Iowa, says President Bush has made mistakes in the conduct of the war in Iraq. But Romney expressed support for the U.S. troop surge in Iraq and vowed to beef up the military.
