BRISTOW, Okla. (AP) _ The attorney who represented Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh is now the lawyer for a woman convicted in the child abuse death of a Meeker toddler. Stephen Jones says he met with Raye Dawn Smith on Monday in the Creek County jail in Sapulpa. Smith is the mother of 2-year-old Kelsey Smith-Briggs, who died in October 2005.
Jurors on July 18th convicted Smith of enabling child abuse and recommended a 27-year prison term.
The Enid lawyer says he may request a new trial and will handle Smith's appeal, if necessary. He may seek a delay in her formal sentencing, set for August 18th.
At trial, prosecutors alleged that Smith did nothing to stop Kelsey's stepfather, Michael Lee Porter, from abusing, sexually assaulting and killing the child.
Smith denied wrongdoing but didn't testify.
Porter was charged with murdering Kelsey, but pleaded guilty in February to enabling child abuse. He is serving 30 years in prison.
