We've been talking about 100 degree temperatures for quite awhile. All the rain that fell earlier in the summer has, so far, kept us from hitting the century mark. In case you're wondering, the last time we went through an entire year without hitting 100 degrees was 2004. Unfortunately, it looks like we will hit 100 degrees here in Tulsa sooner rather than later...just in time for the PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
A large ridge of high pressure has taken control of Oklahoma's weather. We are getting close to 100 degrees, but evaporation from the green vegetation and a little bit of wind has kept us in the 90s.
Right now, we are in the western half of the ridge. A couple of disturbances in the eastern part of the country are going to cause the ridge to "retrograde," or move back west and center itself over the Central Plains. As this happens towards the end of the week, winds will become light, skies will become clear and hazy, and temperatures will climb above the 100 degree mark. Rain chances will be slim to none for the foreseeable future.
Heat Index values will also be dangerously high. It doesn't take much to get overheated. Whether you’re working outdoors or going to Southern Hills to enjoy the PGA Championship, remember to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.
We’ve all been dreading it, but it looks like summer has finally come to Oklahoma.
