OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation says more than 5,000 dead fish were discovered below the Pensacola Dam on Grand Lake. Barry Bolton, chief of fisheries, said the dead fish were mostly white bass, but also included paddlefish, blue and channel catfish and shad.
Bolton said the fish kill resulted from low dissolved oxygen, a problem that sometimes occurs in mid-summer in tailwaters.
A massive fish kill occurred in July last year at the Great Salt Plains Lake in western Oklahoma. Bolton said the lake has been restocked, but it will be years before it recovers.
Justin Alberty of the Grand Lake Dam Authority said the agency is considering installing some type of aeration system below the dam to prevent future fish kills.
