A Tulsa woman is making her dream come true. The News On 6 first introduced you to Leslie Goshko last fall. Leslie was one of several finalists in an online dance contest with a chance to perform in the musical "Hairspray" on Broadway. Well, she won and the News On 6 followed her dream all the way to New York City. However, the story does not end there for Leslie. Leslie Goshko has decided to take another serious step towards following her dreams.
News On 6 reporter Carina Sonn reports Leslie Goshko and her husband Kyle packed up their one bedroom apartment in Tulsa in exchange for a studio in the Big Apple.
Last week, sitting together on lawn chairs, the only furniture they have not given away yet, you can feel the excitement of transition. "I want to be a performer, that's what I want to do. I want to make a living doing what I love. And I think that's a luxury that a lot of people don't have. And since I have the chance, I'm going to do everything I can to make it happen," says Leslie Goshko.
It was not a defining moment but many over several years that made Leslie realize she was born to perform, on stage, in New York. "Hairspray" just made that dream stick even more. "It just felt like home that it was like, this is where I'm supposed to go next," said Leslie Goshko. And the timing just worked out. Leslie finished up the school year at the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences and the couple found an apartment in Manhattan's swanky upper west side just last week.
The couple says finding a place to live was the hard part. So what's next? "All I need now is the show." Leslie says she does not have prospects just yet, but she is not worried. She plans on going to as many open casting calls as she can. Kyle, meanwhile will work with temporary agencies until he finds just the right fit. So here they are in Tulsa, Oklahoma, packing what they have into an even tinier space. Among the old wedding cards and college papers, Leslie finds one of her teaching tools. It's a smile stick, something she used when her students were on stage and ready to perform. "I'd always tell them before the concert. I'd be like 'remember to smile, sing like this, not like this," said Leslie Goshko.
Therefore, with a rarely forced smile on her face, and all of the talent and opportunity the Great White Way has to offer, Leslie and Kyle headed east. "This is me; this is what I'm taking to New York. Are you ready New York? Can you handle this?"
Kyle and Leslie left Tulsa last week and are in New York City right now. Leslie says she is getting her headshots ready and plans to attend her first audition at the end of this week.
