MIAMI, Okla. (AP) -- The cleanup continues in flood-damaged areas of Miami. The city in far northeastern Oklahoma was inundated on the Fourth of July when the Neosho River spilled its banks following weeks of heavy rainfall.
A total of 516 homes were affected by flooding. City officials have declared 124 of them uninhabitable.
Homeowners whose dwellings have been red-tagged must raise the level of their homes above the flood plain if they legally want to rebuild.
City officials say Miami has flooded 20 times in the past 21 years, including 14 times that officials define as serious. A flood plain covers up to 30% of the city's total land mass.
