SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ The coordinator of Big 12 football officials says the conference has a system in place to try to prevent a betting scandal like the one currently involving an NBA referee.

Walt Anderson says the Big 12 for years has run background checks on candidates to become referees and also runs random background checks on current game officials including those in the replay booth and clock operators.

Anderson says the conference has also hired a company to monitor point spreads of games and evaluates every play of every game.

The FBI is investigating NBA referee Tim Donaghy for allegedly betting on games he officiated during the past two seasons.
