A Green Country couple celebrates a marital milestone, 80 years together. Roy and Bertha Adams marked their eight decades of marriage with a family celebration. The couple says the key to longevity is a cool temper. The News On 6’s Chris Wright reports the two claim they have rarely fought during their marriage, and as a result, they are now closing in on a world record.
With five generations of family there to snap pictures and share cake, the couple marked 80 years of what they say has been a stress-free union.
"Haven't had no trouble of any kind, raised five children, and they're all still doing good,†said Roy Adams.
The couple married back on July 18, 1927 in Wewoka, Oklahoma. After surviving the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, the couple moved to Pryor in 1944. Roy Adams opened a barber shop, where he worked until he retired in the 80's. Bertha Adams stayed by his side the whole time.
"They've worked in their gardens, mowed their yards, go to church every Sunday, it's amazing to see them, 101 years old,†said great-granddaughter Valeria Smith.
On their 50th anniversary, the couple was given a plaque, on their 70th, a certificate from the state. Now they may be awarded a world record. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world's longest marriage was 80 years, 15 days. Roy and Bertha Adams will eclipse that in less than two weeks.
"They've had a good marriage, and set a good example for us. I'm just real thrilled about it,†said daughter Helen Weaver.
But the five generations on hand say Sunday's celebration was less about records and more about family. For the most part, the couple’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren have all remained in the Pryor area.
They say Roy and Bertha Adams are the family's rock and couldn't imagine a get-together without them.
"It's touched our lives, and it's touched mine especially. It's just amazing to have my grandparents still alive,†Smith said.
All told, Roy and Bertha Adams have five children, 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 27 great-great grandchildren. The couple also hosted more than 200 foster children over the years.
