Hundreds of job seekers turned out for the Cherokee Casino Career Fair. About 150 service industry positions are open at the Catoosa location, but that's just a fraction of the number that must be filled when the planned expansion is complete. The News On 6's Heather Lewin reports casino officials say economic growth is sending a ripple effect through the community.

It takes about 1,800 employees to keep things running at the Cherokee Casino. With more than 100 open positions, officials say streamlined events like this job fair are the best way to go.

“It's critical to us because our employees really are who we are and what we are to the customers, so it's critical that we have enough to reach our service levels and to reach the kind of customer service that we want,” said Cherokee Nation Enterprises CEO David Stewart.

Applicants fill out their paperwork, sit down right away with a hiring manager, and if they're recommended for hire, move to the next area for onsite drug testing.

Stewart says the casino is a major contributor to economic growth with the money CNE pours into the area.

"I would estimate by the time we pay all of our vendors and services and the payroll that we would be in excess of $150 million,” Stewart said.

While the tribally owned business is tax exempt, that payroll and vendor money is spread around Catoosa and beyond, and the amount is likely to jump much higher when the new expansion is complete.

The parking garage is already done. The new convention center and 250 more hotel rooms will be built around it and is slated to open in about 18 months. That will bring at least 400 new jobs to the area, which Stewart says impacts real estate, local sales and more.

“We feel like we're critical to the success,” said Stewart.

If you missed the job fair, you can still apply online or in person during regular business hours at the casino. The open jobs are service positions including food, beverages, hotel and gaming. Those hired will start almost immediately.
