June 21st was the first official day of summer according to the 2007 calendar. However, here in Northeastern Oklahoma, summer has yet to start. June finished the 3rd wettest on record for Tulsa and the wettest month on record for the state of Oklahoma. A majority of the area lakes are well above normal and some are above the flood control pool. July has continued the soggy stretch with heavy rains throughout much of the area. Tulsa also tied the record for the latest date in the year to reach 92 degrees, July 5th. So, the million dollar question is, when will summer begin, at least meteorologically? Some of our long range computer models are starting to hint that a more summer like pattern will settle in place over the next couple weeks. But look on the bright side. That would mean summer like weather would be just starting at the beginning of August. That's when we start talking about one to two weeks of 100 degree days. This may be the summer without 100 degree temps and 110 degree heat indexes. When summer does finally start, temps will likely be in the mid 90s, but the heat index will still be 105 to 110, since all of this moisture has left behind a very humid environment. Short story, enjoy the cooler summer weather while it is still here and go find a local festival or event while it is still not as hot as it would normally be in July.
