NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ A shark nipped a teenage surfer and caused slight injuries before letting go, authorities said.

Chaz Cecil, 18, was bit on his right foot Thursday afternoon, according to the beach patrol.

``This is a pretty typical Volusia County bite,'' Capt. Scott Petersohn said. ``A couple of small lacerations to the top of the foot.''

Petersohn said the shark likely didn't know what he was grabbing and when it realized, it let go.

``This was a case of mistaken identity,'' he said.

New Smyrna Beach is 14 miles south of Daytona Beach.
