LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (AP) _ The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference welcomed its first out-of-state member on Thursday.
C.W. Post, based in Brookville, N.Y., formally accepted an invitation to become an associate PSAC member in football and field hockey, beginning in the 2008 academic year.
The PSAC on Wednesday added Gannon and Mercyhurst as full-time members. The three new additions give the Division II league its first private schools.
The conference, formed in 1951, had been comprised of 14 state-owned schools: Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinoro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester.
Mansfield dropped football last year, so the PSAC will be down to 13 teams in that sport this fall. But it will be boosted to 16 with Gannon, Mercyhurst and C.W. Post in the fold for 2008.
C.W. Post is a campus of Long Island University. There are no plans to change the name of the conference, the PSAC has said.
