Non-stop rain dampens some Fourth of July celebrations. Stillwater is postponing its annual fireworks display, because of the weather. Organizers say the heavy rain has made parking impossible, so they're going to reschedule when the forecast clears up. The News On 6’s Ashli Sims reports as long as the rain isn't falling down in Tulsa, the fireworks will be going up.
It's 30 minutes of dancing sparkles and spectacular explosions of color, but some are concerned Green Country's continued water works could extinguish the fireworks.
“We're praying for no rain," said Rockets Over Rhema coordinator Craig Hagin.
Hagin is convinced the recent rains won't ruin Rockets Over Rhema on Sunday, but he says it is causing a parking problem.
“Some of our parking was going to be on grass. So we're trying to make arrangements around here on concrete, because we need something firm, but everything else should be going as planned,†Hagin said.
Tulsa's big display along the 21st Street bridge is also still on. Organizers there say all they need is a 30 minute window of clear skies.
Fireworks stands aren't swamped with customers, but folks at one Broken Arrow stand say that's not their biggest worry.
"Business has been pretty constant through the week, but the rain doesn't help us at all because if the fireworks get wet their ruined. And that's not good for business,†said fireworks retailer Phillip Basse.
Basse says some kinds of fireworks can take the water, but most need to remain dry to light up the sky come July 4th.
Despite the weather, Rhema organizers say there could be a silver lining to this rain cloud if it clears by Sunday.
“The fact that it's actually a nice day will bring people out. People are tired of being inside all of the time,†said Hagin. “It’s nice to get outside and have some outdoor activities, especially if it’s not 105 degrees."
Again Rhema and Grace are still on for Sunday, and the big Tulsa celebration is scheduled to kick off Wednesday.
