NEW YORK (AP) -- It's the last time family members of 9/11 victims will be gathered with rescue workers and others for a midnight Christmas Mass at ground zero. Construction at the site is taking up more and more space, and there won't be room by next year. The first such Mass came just three and a half months after the attacks, as workers continued to remove debris from the World Trade Center site.
About 75 people attended this year's Mass. Reverend Brian Jordan has presided over every one of the midnight services. He decided to end the tradition after officials informed him that heavy construction would make it impossible to hold a Mass on the site next year.
Jordan says many felt sad it was the last official onsite service but adds that the occasion also "brought closure."
