Opponents of a proposed rock quarry in Sand Springs got what they wanted, at least for now. The Sand Springs Planning Commission turned down a request to develop a rock quarry in the middle of town. The News On 6’s Chris Wright reports the planning commission voted unanimously Tuesday night against allowing a special permit for the quarry that would be developed near 41st Street and state Highway 97 in Sand Springs.
The attorney representing Westward Environmental says he is not surprised, and he will appeal the decision. Both sides were given an opportunity to make their case before the planning commission. Westward's Environmental's lawyer pointed out that his client has the right to develop its property.
He also contended that residents concerns were unwarranted, saying there's no evidence blasting would harm nearby homes or the environment. On the other hand, the Homebuilder's Association says the quarry property values hurt Sand Spring's image.
Westward Environmental's lawyer says this is far from over, while residents say they'll oppose the quarry for as long as it takes.
"It was expected. Absolutely expected. The pressure from the people was too great. I think the final decision on this matter will be decided in district court,†said attorney James Weger.
"We're gonna be here, or in Tulsa. Where ever they go, we're going to follow them. We'll be their worst nightmare,†said Sand Springs resident Nancy Freeman.
The company will appeal this decision before Sand Spring's city council, probably sometime in January. If that fails, this will likely head to district court.
