TULSA, Okla. (AP) An elite bicycle motocross event begins in Tulsa on Friday. The American Bicycle Association is capping off its 30th year with its Grand Nationals at Expo Square. The event comes one year before BMX becomes an Olympic sport. Events are scheduled through Sunday.
Tulsa has hosted the event for nearly a decade, and ABA officials announced last year that they would continue to make Tulsa the home for the Grand Nationals through at least 2014.
ABA president Clayton John says the city is centrally located for the 3,400 competitors who come from across the country, and the Expo Square is one of the few facilities with a quarter-mile-long track.
Officials estimate the event has a $7.2 million economic impact on the area.
