SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) _ Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe is planning a comeback. And he plans to start it at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation's Fire Lake Casino in Shawnee.
But physicians and Bowe's former manager believe tomorrow night's fight could be a prescription for disaster.
After Bowe's last fight eight years ago, his speech was so slurred that he was barely understandable. A doctor later said Bowe's brain was damaged from too many punches.
But doctors who examined Bowe recently say there's nothing to indicate he has brain damage or other physical problems. And the former champion no longer slurs his words.
That get him a boxing license from the Indian tribe with cooperation from the Oklahoma Boxing Commission, Several other states showed little interest in Bowe.
