OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A new poll commissioned by KWTV shows Democratic Congressman Brad Carson with a slight lead over Republican Tom Coburn in the race for the US Senate.

The poll of 500 likely Oklahoma voters shows Carson with 39% and Coburn with 37%. The lead is within the poll's 4.4% margin of error.

The poll was conducted by Virginia-based Wilson Research Strategies.

It marks the first time that Carson has led Coburn in any polls commissioned by The Oklahoman or KWTV.

The head of Wilson Research Strategies -- Chris Wilson -- says the new numbers show recent TV ads by Carson targeting older voters are proving successful.
