OKMULGEE, Okla. (AP) -- A Henryetta teenager accused of killing his former girlfriend is asking to be tried as a youthful offender.

17 year-old Cody James is currently charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the July shooting death of 16-year-old Rebecca Johnson.

A motion to charge James as a juvenile says he has no criminal record and the shooting was accidental.

If convicted as a youthful offender the longest he could be held in the juvenile system is until his 19th birthday. He could then be moved into an adult prison if a judge decides more prison time is appropriate.

James is currently being held in the Okmulgee County jail.
